VR, gesture-control tech superpowers join forces to create the Immersive Tech Alliance

You may or may not be able to keep your lunch down while using the Oculus Rift, but you can probably expect a lot more tech like it in the not-too-distant future. Oculus VR, EA, Epson, Panasonic, and a number of other companies, universities, and industry organizations have come together to form the Immersive Technology Alliance (ITA), a consortium dedicated to making advances in augmented and virtual reality technology.

The group, which will make its official debut March 18 during a session at this year's Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, was born out of the Stereoscopic 3D Gaming Alliance, but with an expanded focus to "effectively meet the needs of the newly established Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), stereoscopic 3D and gesture industries," the ITA noted in a press release.

With a focus that broad, the ITA goes well beyond VR headsets like the Oculus Rift. It's also about technology along the lines of the Microsoft Kinect and Leap Motion, as well as Google's Ingress augmented reality game.

Of course, just as notable is which companies are missing from the consortium. You won't see Microsoft listed. There's no Nintendo or Sony there, either. It'll be interesting to see if console makers hop on board now that the working group has a wider focus, however.
