Quark unveils new HTML5-based App Studio

Quark has announced an upgrade to its App Studio program for creating and publishing mobile apps, and it is relocating this creative tool to the cloud. The new version of App Studio will allow designers to create rich, interactive apps not only for iOS mobile devices, but also for Android devices and the Kindle Fire eReader.

What Quark is calling the next generation App Studio is based on the PressRun service from Mobile IQ, an enterprise cloud publisher Quark purchased in April. The new version of App Studio lets users create and collaborate on interactive apps in the cloud that are built with QuarkXPress or InDesign, HTML5, and/or XML. The PressRun technology lets users mix multiple file types within a single app.

"The new App Studio combines the best parts of PressRun and its cloud-based technology with the best features of QuarkXPress that enable people to design content to multiple channels and multiple devices and synchronize them in the cloud," said Gavin Drake, Quark's vice president of marketing.

App Studio publication preview in the browser.

The new App Studio's use of HTML5 facilitates features like searchable, selectable text, tagging, bookmarking, commenting, and multifaceted social media interaction.

Basing content creation on HTML5 also allows for touch-based interactivity like 360-degree image rotation, animations, email, vertical scrolling pages, audio, carousels, hotspots and popups, hyperlinks, slideshows, zoomable images, geolocation, page flips, HTML5 widgets, and more. These kinds of elements are created in an authoring program like QuarkXPress and InDesign without coding. When the issue is uploaded to the App Studio Portal, App Studio creates the HTML5 code.

Cloud orientation

Quark's original App Studio, introduced last fall for the iPad and based on technology licensed from Aquafadas, offered native functionality linked to iOS and made heavy use of images of rasterized text and overlaid interactivity, much like interactive PDF files. Users created apps in Quark's App Studio Factory and tested them on the iPad with the App Studio Issue Previewer. According to Quark, this technique generated large files with limited interactivity, and lacked the flexibility to accommodate new types of devices.

App Studio on the iPad.

PressRun, with its emphasis on HTML5, allows developers to take a more hybrid approach to content creation. It offers a variety of up-to-date smartphone and tablet features and gives publishers more flexibility to deploy their designs to different platforms. Those designs are more accessible, searchable, and usable, said Drake, and the resulting file sizes are also comparatively smallA focus on WebKit technology ensures apps are compatible with iOS, Android, and the Kindle Fire.

Content can be created for the new App Studio in InDesign CS5 or higher, as well as the upcoming QuarkXPress 9.5. A new HTML5 palette in App Studio provides a platform for interactive enrichment of content. An App Studio Publishing Palette lets users connect to App Studio Publishing Portal, the cloud-based service where users upload content, plan pages, collaborate with workgroups, and deploy issues for publication. Sections managed by different contributors can be uploaded independently and simultaneously. All pages can be seen directly in the browser. An Issue Previewer app, available from the app stores, lets participants view the contents of the portal on the targeted device. When the app is ready, it can be published to supported devices.

Pricing

The new App Studio prices are tiered to cater to various projects and workgroups ranging from small shops or individual designers to large, complex enterprise teams. For a single edition one-off app, the price is $100, with the source content derived exclusively from QuarkXPress. Multiple issues of a single publication are $100 per month, based on a year's subscription. This Pro plan offers unlimited issues for the iPad, iPhone, and Kindle Fire, and allows for 1000 issue downloads per month.

App Studio on the iPhone.

Add Android phones and tablets to the Pro mix and you get the Premium multi-issue subscription for $496 per month for 2500 issue downloads per month. Designs for the Premium subscription can originate in either Quark or InDesign. The Enterprise version offers custom app feature development and XML automation, volume discounts for multiple apps, and Quark Enterprise integration with an option for self hosting. Pricing is set on a case-by-case basis.

Quark has reassured current PressRun customers that the transition from PressRun to App Studio will be seamless as Quark retires PressRun as a brand. More information about this process is available at the PressRun website.

Meantime, current App Studio customers using the program's original AVE file format will have a choice to continue with the previous Aquafadas-powered App Studio technology—renamed Quark AVE—or migrate to the new HTML5, cloud-based platform.

The new version of App Studio will be available in the next 30-days. More information and the ability to sign up for notification of when the app is released, is available on Quark's website.

Meet AMD’s new tablet APU: The Z-60 delivers Radeon graphics for Windows 8 touch

ARM chips may dominate the tablet space, but AMD will not be daunted. On Tuesday the company announced a new Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) aimed at Windows 8 tablets and other mobile devices that need to sip power in the service of longer battery life.

Just one problem, though: On paper, it doesn't look like AMD's power conservation will beat Intel's.

The new Z-60 APU, AMD's second stab at the tablet market, is a clear step up from the company's previous Z-01 APU. The Z-01 saw relatively little traction in an x86 tablet market dominated by Intel's Atom platform. However, that market was also dwarfed by the vast array of ARM devices running either iOS or Android.

Of course, Microsoft's imminent announcement of Windows 8 adds a new twist to AMD's mobile aspirations, with a plethora of new tablets or tablet-like convertible systems arriving, including many based on Intel's new Z2760 Atom, a.k.a., Clover Trail. AMD would clearly like to get in on the Windows 8 tablet action, and hopes the Z60 will be just the catalyst for a few key design wins.

Like Clover Trail, the Z-60 is a dual-core solution, and improves on AMD's earlier effort by increasing clock frequency from the Z-01's 276MHz to a more robust 1GHz. That contrasts with Atom's top clock frequency of 1.8GHz, but remember, clock frequency rarely scales with real-world performance. More interesting is the inclusion of AMD Radeon class graphics technology, offering 80 GPU cores. That's likely to outpace Intel on the graphics front. And while the Z-60's 3D performance is likely to be better than Atom's, AMD is also claiming better image quality and performance for high-definition video.

What's troubling, though, is the power spec of the Z-60. All this graphics goodness comes at a price: The Z-60's rated power is 4.5W, somewhat higher than Intel's claimed 1.7W for the Atom Z2760. What that could mean for Intel is either longer battery life than an equivalent AMD-based unit, or lighter weight battery packaging for the same amount of battery life.

In essence: Customers will have to choose between possibly better graphics or longer battery life.

The other problem for AMD is that it's late to the x86 tablet party. While Intel-based designs are already being shown and shipped, AMD stated that products based on the Z-60 won't launch until the end of the year. Given the importance of the holiday season, it's unclear how much impact AMD's Z-60 will actually have on the overall tablet product mix.

Microsoft may surprise music fans with October launch

Written By Unknown on Senin, 08 Oktober 2012 | 16.01

Microsoft took a lot of the sizzle out of its scheduled product launches in October by announcing the products months before consumers could get their hands on primetime versions of them. However, Redmond may be playing a surprise card when it rolls out Windows 8 and its Surface tablets at midnight on October 26.

microsoft surface windows 8Microsoft Surface

That surprise card is a new music service tied to Microsoft's gaming platform, Xbox. While Microsoft has confirmed that it has a music service in the works called Xbox Music to replace its old Zune Music Pass, the company has been less than forthcoming with details about the new service.

Following reports last week that Xbox Music will debut with other new products on October 26, Microsoft pushed out to the press a statement long on enthusiasm and short in detail. It said:

"We're not commenting on speculation around Xbox Music. What we can say is we're excited for Xbox Music as our definitive music service. It'll bring great new ways to enjoy, share and discover new music on all your Windows 8 devices, Xbox 360 console, and Windows Phone 8. We'll let you know when we have more information to share."

Despite Microsoft's attempts to keep a lid on information about the new music service, unconfirmed tidbits keep surfacing. For example, The Verge, citing sources familiar with Microsoft's plans for the service, said Xbox Music would have both a paid and free component.

The service will run on all Microsoft devices, the report says, and eventually, on Android and iOS hardware, although that won't be the case at its initial release.

xboxXbox 360

Xbox Music will reportedly be supported in the new dashboard for Microsoft's gaming console, as well as in updates to music and video apps for Windows 8. Integration with Microsoft's cloud storage service SkyDrive, for storage of music and playlists, are also be an important component of the new service, according to the report.

News that Xbox Music will contain a free component similar to Spotify complement reports that Microsoft is engaged in negotiations to acquire Internet music provider Rdio. Rdio is a competitor of Spotify that offers a paid streaming music service.

Neither Microsoft nor Rdio is commenting about any potential deal. The acquisition, though, would make sense for both companies. Rdio could use Microsoft's resources to be more competitive against Spotify. Microsoft could use Rdio to further its plans to make Xbox Music a cross-platform agnostic service.

Meanwhile, on the paid side of things, last month a "leaked" subscription screen allegedly for Xbox Music appeared on the Internet. It shows that the service can be tried free for 30 days, with a month's use priced at $9.99 and an annual subscriptions at $99.90.

Judge weighs fate of orphaned Megaupload data

A U.S. federal judge has asked for more information to plan an evidentiary hearing concerning the fate of terabytes of data held in limbo since the shutdown of the Megaupload file-sharing site.

U.S. government prosecutors and Kyle Goodwin will submit briefs because "the court finds that it is unable to reach a conclusion as to this matter without an evidentiary hearing," according to the order, signed on Tuesday by U.S. District Court Judge Liam O'Grady in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) filed a motion in March on behalf of Goodwin, an Ohio-based sports reporter who lost access to data he stored on Megaupload after the site was shutdown on January on criminal copyright infringement charges.

The EFF has asked the court to find a way to return data to owners who legally hold the rights. Megaupload's 1103 servers, which hold upwards of 28 petabytes of data, are still held by Carpathia Hosting, Megaupload's U.S. hosting provider.

"We are glad that Mr. Goodwin will finally get to make his case in court, and we look forward to helping the judge fashion a procedure to make all of Megaupload's consumers whole again by granting them access to what is legally theirs," wrote Julie Samuels, an EFF staff attorney.

Megupload will ask the court to make a special appearance in order to weigh in on the data issue, said Ira Rothken, one of the file-sharing site's attorneys, on Friday.

Rothken said Megaupload can't file a brief without that permission since it is has a motion before the court contending the U.S. doesn't have jurisdiction over the company because it was based in Hong Kong. U.S. federal criminal procedures dictate that a company must be served a summons in the U.S., and Megaupload was never served.

O'Grady has yet to rule on the motion to dismiss the charges against the company.

If it is allowed to make a special appearance, Megaupload will advocate returning data to users. "Megaupload looks forward to having the court determine whether or not the U.S. acted appropriately by turning off all consumer access to data," Rothken said.

The U.S. government along with the Motion Picture Association of America have opposed allowing Megaupload to retake control of the data. The U.S. contends Megaupload encouraged users to upload files without permission of copyright owners and collected US$175 million through advertising and premium subscriptions.

Megaupload's founder, Kim Dotcom, and his colleagues Finn Batato, Mathias Ortmann and Bram van der Kolk, are charged with criminal copyright infringement, money laundering and fraud. Extradition proceedings for the four, now living in New Zealand, are expected to start next year.

Xerox Mobile Scanner: A Versatile Companion for Business Travelers

Xerox Mobile ScannerIf you need to digitize printed documents or photos while on the go, the Xerox Mobile Scanner fits the bill--and it does so with a twist. About the size of a roll of aluminum foil and weighing about 1.5 pounds, this $250 (as of March 8, 2012) sheet-fed scanner can turn printed items into PDFs or JPGs, and then send them wirelessly to a PC, a mobile device, or the Web in a matter of seconds.

It can do all of that for up to 300 pages (according to Xerox) without being connected to electrical power, assuming that you've fully charged its internal battery. And it doesn't need a preexisting Wi-Fi network either, as it can create a direct connection to any other Wi-Fi-enabled device.

Created by Visioneer (which offers a similar but not identical product under its own brand), the Xerox Mobile Scanner innovates primarily in its use of an Eye-Fi SD Card--a gadget best known for both storing images and functioning as a Wi-Fi adapter, enabling the wireless transfer of images captured by a digital camera.

The Eye-Fi card that comes bundled with the Xerox Mobile Scanner was created for the product. It can store up to 4GB of scans, so you don't have to transfer them right away. When you're ready, you simply launch the free software on the intended destination (a Windows or Mac computer, or an iOS or Android mobile device) to initiate the wireless transfer.

Setup takes only about 15 minutes once you've charged the device--which does take several hours--by running the included USB cable between the scanner and either an AC adapter (also included) or a computer. After that, you connect the USB cable to the PC (if it isn't already connected) and then, with the Eye-Fi card inserted in the SD Card slot located by the USB port, power on the scanner. The Eye-Fi card appears as a drive on the computer, with its installation software in separate folders for Windows or Mac.

Running the installation software prompts you to create an Eye-Fi account, which you'll need to use the wireless features. The account is free, but Eye-Fi offers premium upgrades such as the ability to store your scans indefinitely on Eye-Fi's servers so that you can access them with any browser (the basic account stores the scans only for a week).

After you create the account, you can input Wi-Fi network settings and specify where you want scans to go--for example, to your PC or to a supported Web service such as Facebook. Alternatively, you can use a peer-to-peer Wi-Fi connection (Wi-Fi Direct) with a mobile device, as opposed to an existing Wi-Fi network. The Wi-Fi Direct option is very useful for people on the go since once you set it up, you can transfer scans to a mobile device in multiple locations without having to change Wi-Fi network settings repeatedly. All you need to do is install a free iOS or Android app that will enable the Wi-Fi Direct connection with the scanner.

You don't have to transmit scans wirelessly, however. You can instead store them on the SD Card or on a USB flash drive, or you can scan to a computer using the USB cable.

Scanning is fairly straightforward. The device has only two hardware buttons, a power button and a function button meant primarily for cycling among the three available scan formats (color JPG, color PDF, or black-and-white PDF, all captured at 300 dpi). The power state is indicated by a green LED, while blue LEDs next to small icons show which scan mode you've chosen. To scan a document you insert it face up and flush left into the paper feed slot. The device can scan items as small as ID cards or business cards, or as large as standard letter paper. It takes only about 10 seconds to scan a single sheet.

Xerox throws in a few popular scanning utilities on DVD: Nuance Paperport document management, OmniPage optical character recognition software for turning scanned text into editable copy, and NewSoft Presto BizCard for scanning and organizing business cards. You also get a padded canvas case, plug adapters for different countries, and a calibration sheet that Xerox recommends using as part of a monthly maintenance routine.

I had only minor quibbles with the Xerox Mobile Scanner, mostly stemming from the rather skimpy printed documentation (a quick-start guide). For instance, you have to go to the online manual to learn how to set up the Eye-Fi card and understand the error codes, which appear in the form of flashing LEDs.

The printed guide also fails to mention the device's airplane mode (which turns off the Eye-Fi card's wireless capability), and how to access it: You hold down the function button after selecting the black-and-white PDF scanning mode. I inadvertently put the device into airplane mode while trying to set up the Eye-Fi to work with my iPad, which led to extended tech support sessions. Better documentation and/or a more intuitive design might have avoided the problem.

That said, however, the Xerox Mobile Scanner generally delivers on its promise of quickly creating scans in popular formats and moving them wirelessly to PCs, mobile devices, or the Web. While smartphone cameras can do some of this work for smaller documents, business travelers with more serious scanning needs should find the Xerox Mobile Scanner a versatile and useful tool.

Google isn't evil, says Bork's analysis of antitrust complaints

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 07 Oktober 2012 | 16.00

Google's search business practices, currently under scrutiny by regulators around the world, were defended this week in a paper by former federal appeals court Judge Robert H. Bork and J. Gregory Sidak, chairman of Criterion Economics.

In a 29-page report [PDF], the authors argue that claims by Google's rivals that its search practices violate antitrust law "contradict real world experiences in search."

Those claims, Bork and Sidak contend, "demonstrate [the] competitors' efforts to compete not by investing in efficiency, quality or innovation, but by using antitrust law to punish [a] successful competitor."

The authors maintain that Google's search and ranking algorithms are not unfair in any way; they're just part of the search giant's successful competitive practices. "Punishing Google for being the most effective search competitor would harm consumers and does contradict the recognized purpose of antitrust law," Bork and Sidak write.

It would put a crimp in the existing "dynamic competition" in the online search market, they maintain. Restricting such competition would hurt those consumers and advertisers, they add.

"Antitrust intervention that would prohibit or circumscribe Google's practices would punish and therefore deter the same welfare-enhancing innovations that have made Google an effective competitor," they wrote. "Such use of antitrust law would weaken dynamic competition, as only successful firms would need to worry about being penalized for being winners."

"Losers do not face monopolization suits for having lacked a superior product, business acumen or the benefits of a historic accident," they add.

Despite the complaints of Google's competitors, Bork and Sidak assert that the search giant has no incentive to act anticompetitively. "That consumers can switch to substitute search engines instantaneously and at zero cost constrains Google's ability and incentive to act anticompetitively," the report states.

The same is true about its rivals' complaints that Google specialized search is foreclosing vertical search providers, such as Amazon, Yelp, and Next Tag, from the market by making Google specialized search results higher on search pages than those of its competitors.

Google's search results include standard returns and those with paid placement.

"As a matter of economic analysis, however, Google has no incentive to foreclose competitors from search because doing so is unlikely to offer additional profit at the potential cost of driving away consumers," Bork and Sidak contend.

The authors dismiss all anticompetitive claims against Google as an attempt by its rivals to advance their own self-interest, noting, "Given the serious factual, logical and economic flaws in the antitrust complaints about Google's practices, one can reasonably conclude only that Google's competitors are seeking to use antitrust laws to protect their own market positions."

Punishing Google for its business practices, they add, "would necessitate regulation of search algorithms and product improvements, which would retard the current pace of innovation in Internet search that has created enormous gains in consumer welfare."

Antitrust allegations against Google have been the focus of global regulators for months. In the United States, the Senate has convened hearings on the subject and the Federal Trade Commission is conducting an ongoing probe of the search giant.

In addition, the European Union and India are probing allegations of anticompetitive practices by Google.

Starbucks adopts Square wireless wallet

Coffee chain Starbucks will begin accepting payments through Square's Wallet mobile app this fall, including the capability to digitally tip favorite baristas.

The move further legitimizes Square's software-based mobile payment system, which is already accepted at several retailers including Best Buy, OfficeMax, Staples, AT&T, and Sprint. The announcement accompanied an update to Starbuck's iOS app that adds its loyalty card to the Passbook app in iOS6.

The Starbucks iOS app raises an alert anytime the device is within close proximity of a Starbucks. Opening the alert retrieves the digital version of the user's Starbucks Card. Apple picked Passbook for its mobile payment system in iOS over Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, which uses a wireless chip inside the phone to transmit payment information.

Starbucks announced its partnership with Square back in August. At the time, Starbucks said it would replace its own credit card processing back end with Square's technology, and Starbucks invested $25 million in the company.

The extension of the deal will further reduce Starbucks' credit card processing cost, and Square will likely get a boost in application installations given the coffee retailer's extremely loyal customer base—a win-win situation for both.

"Starbucks and Square share a passion for constantly improving the customer experience," Square founder and CEO Jack Dorsey says in a statement. "This partnership gives millions of Starbucks customers a quick, seamless payment experience and introduces them to hundreds of thousands of small businesses in the Square directory."

Foxconn denies strike, says iPhone 5 production is on track

Foxconn, Apple's giant Taiwanese manufacturing partner, denies reports that workers at one of its Chinese factories went on strike Friday and says the only disturbances happened earlier in the week but were squelched right away.

The labor rights group that reported a strike says issues are not resolved, however. And China's factories face challenges not only with labor matters, but also its general approach to manufacturing, and global attention to its practices, notes one analyst.

Foxconn Denials

Foxconn's e-mailed statement answers the claim by labor rights group China Labor Watch that thousands of workers went on strike at a Foxconn factory yesterday, bringing some iPhone 5 production lines to a halt. The labor watchdog group said 3000 to 4000 workers refused to work at a Foxconn complex in Zhengzhou because of increasing quality controls as well as an order to work through a week-long national holiday that began on Monday.

foxconn zhengzhouIDGNSFoxconn's Zhengzhou factory

Foxconn, for its part, says employees who worked through the holiday volunteered to do so and were paid three times their regular hourly rate. The company also says the only issues with workers occurred October 1 and 2 and were "immediately addressed and measures taken, including providing additional staff for the lines in question," Reuters reports.

Foxconn also says reports of a strike are inaccurate and that work hasn't stopped at the Zhengzhou facility or any other. "[P]roduction has continued on schedule," its statement reports.

Even so, Foxconn's Chinese plants have had problems before. Last month, 2000 workers rioted at a factory in Taiyuan after what workers described as aggressive behavior from security guards.

Quality pressures

In spite of Foxconn's claims that everything is just fine, the company has been cracking down on workers to prevent tiny indentations on the iPhone 5—the anodized aluminum on its back and edges is easily scratched and marked, especially on the black model.

foxconnChina Labor WatchFoxconn workers

China Labor Watch had claimed that a fight between workers and quality-control inspectors resulted in some injuries that sent some people to go to the hospital.

"They have such high expectations for these products, even if you raise the demands a little bit it makes a huge difference to the pressure on the workers," says Li Qiang, China Labor Watch's executive director, in an interview.

The Foxconn workers who went on strike Friday returned to work on Saturday, according to China Labor Watch.

Ongoing issues

It's hard to even verify situations like a rumored strike in China because of the way the government censors how people use websites such as Facebook, Twitter and Google, which might perpetuate things such as a photo of a work stoppage, notes Roger Kay, tech market analyst and founder and CEO of Endpoint Technologies.

Roger KayRoger Kay

"We do know that there's labor issues in general in China," Kay says. "It's clear from the suicides, it's clear from strikes that have occurred, so whether or not this particular strike was minor and cleaned up quickly or major and ongoing, we know there is an issue there. It's not just Foxconn but it's the Chinese manufacturing system in general that's in question."

He expects Foxconn and other manufacturers will increasingly deal with worker complaints, which have drawn interest beyond its borders. "As labor gets more entitled it demands more in terms of work hours, work conditions and wages and it adds expense to the bill of materials," he says.

It's not just cheap labor that makes China the center of manufacturing, Kay says. China first lured manufacturers to its coast with tax breaks and investments in infrastructure such as roads and electricity. Lax labor and environmental laws also help draw electronics makers, because they didn't have to spend money to make sure that these things were done right, Kay says.

"But then it became self-fulfilling, which is I'm sure what the Chinese had in mind. Once everyone was already there, like in Shenzhen, that's where you had to be because you need to be near your suppliers and your suppliers are all there," Kay says.

china

But recently, some companies like Hewlett-Packard and Acer have moved their factories to China's interior where it's cheaper to operate. Employees are not the biggest or only expense, Kay says.

"The labor input to many electronics is only 1 percent and so if your labor costs twice as much or half as much it would be the difference between a half a percent, 1 percent and 2 percent, so it's not a real big number in terms of the bill of materials cost for an electronics item," he says.

"The economics of making an iPhone are such that there has to be a tremendous distillation of value in China and then delivered to the United States so that somebody here can buy a really nice iPhone for $700 list," Kay says. "I feel like there's a tension there that is ultimately not sustainable but I don't know what the resolution is."

Jadi mulai lah pada urutan paling bawah(no 15).
