State AGs say Google profits from harmful YouTube videos

Google is benefiting in terms of advertisement revenue from YouTube videos that depict and even promote dangerous or illegal activities, two state attorneys general in the U.S. have stated in a letter to the company.

The move follows concerns raised by Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood who asked Google last month to address issues on its search site that are allowing consumers to obtain illegal and counterfeit goods, including the online sale of dangerous drugs without a prescription.

"We understand that YouTube is an open platform and that not all content can or should be policed," Jon Bruning, Nebraska attorney general, and Scott Pruitt, attorney general of Oklahoma, wrote in the letter Tuesday.

The officials said they found it "troubling" that Google actively seeks to profit from the posting of the objectionable videos, and asked Google for information on measures, if any, it has taken to avoid hosting paid advertising on videos containing illegal or objectionable content, and to remove such advertising once such videos are discovered.

The attorneys general also want information on how much revenue Google has received from advertising associated with the videos.

The attorneys general were particularly concerned about videos promoting the sale of prescription painkiller drugs without a prescription, providing guides for forging passports and driving licenses and promoting the sale of counterfeit merchandise.

"It is our understanding that Google and the video poster share in the profits from this advertising revenue," according to the letter.

YouTube said it has community guidelines that prohibit any content encouraging dangerous, illegal activities, including content promoting the sale of drugs. YouTube's review teams respond to videos flagged for its attention around the clock, removing any content that violates its policies. "We also have stringent advertising guidelines, and work to prevent ads appearing against any video, channel or page once we determine that the content is not appropriate for our advertising partners," according to an emailed statement.

At a meeting of the National Association of Attorneys General in Boston last month, the role of Google search and its other services to facilitate access to illegal pharmacies, counterfeit products, and human trafficking was in sharp focus.

Google's search algorithm including its auto-complete feature often leads to sites known to sell counterfeit goods being at the top of Google search results, Hood said last month. Attorneys general are concerned that some of the sites selling counterfeit goods are advertising with Google, he added. The attorney general, who is co-chair of the National Association of Attorneys General Intellectual Property Committee, warned that officials would have to issue subpoenas to Google because of its "lack of response."

Google wrote in a blog post in June that it does not remove content from search results except in certain circumstances such as child sexual abuse imagery, and certain links to copyrighted material, spam or malware, as it is for courts and lawmakers and not Google to determine what content should be censored.

The company, however, claims to have extremely stringent ad policies, and uses sophisticated automated systems, along with some human review, "to identify, block and remove ads suspected of linking to rogue pharmacies." In the last two years alone, Google blocked or removed from its systems over 3 million ads by suspected rogue pharmacies, it wrote in the blog post.

Digital Citizens Alliance in a report released in June highlighted that videos on YouTube promote the sale of prescription painkiller drugs. The report by the consumer group also said that YouTube was being used to promote the sale of forged passports and drivers licenses, escort services, prostitution and content theft.

Review: Canon Pixma MX922 has great small-office features and pricey ink

A moderately busy small or home office is the target audience for the Canon Pixma MX922. For its $200 price (as of 06/28/2013), this color inkjet multifunction handles every office chore, from automatic two-sided scanning and printing, to faxing and printing optical media. Output quality and speed are good, too. But the party ends with the ink cartridges, which are no great bargain.

Modern design and capable software

The Canon Pixma MX922 is a well-rounded multifunction inkjet printer, literally as well as feature-wise. It has Canon's signature rounded corners, a beveled top and bottom, and many of the design improvements introduced with the Pixma MG6320—including the wrap-around front panel and small flip-open ink access lid. However, it retains Canon's last-generation controls, with the three action buttons and separate four-way cursor. The issue with these is that some functions are available only via the action buttons, and some only via the contextually lit cursor/okay buttons. It's confusing, inefficient, and—if you use the panel often enough—aggravating. On the plus side, the button grid transforms into a keypad when you need to use the unit's fax capabilities.

Installing is MX922 is easy, if a wee bit tedious. There are quite a few dialogs to click through, but the install routine found the printer on the network quickly and there were no other glitches. We used Wi-Fi, but you may also connect directly to a PC via the unit's USB 2.0 port, or wire it to your network via ethernet. The software is the usual efficient Canon bundle, with its veteran scanning utility, Image Garden for organizing and editing photos, and a solid driver. There are also usual remote and email printing features.

As mentioned, the MX922 automatically prints and scans in duplex. Paper capacity is decent for a small office multifunction: 250 sheets, which reside in a bottom-mounted cassette that extends to handle legal-sized paper. Directly above the cassette and revealed when the front panel drops are a 20-sheet photo tray for 4-by-6-inch media, and a feed for printable optical media. As with most Canon printers, the front panel drops automatically as printing begins, so you can keep it closed for appearances yet not have to worry about a paper catastrophe when you send a job.

Good speed and output quality

The pages emerging from the MX922 have the typical Canon look: That means sharp text, decent plain-paper graphics, and very nice photos. By default, the latter tend to look a tad light compared to the competition, but the color palette is essentially accurate, gradients are smooth, and details in dark areas are nicely defined. They photos are not quite up to what you'll see from high-end photo printers, but for a $200 MFP they're excellent.

When we reviewed this printer's predecessor, the Pixma MX892, we complained about the lack of high-yield inks to cut printing costs. Canon apparently listened—this new model has them—but the costs didn't improve much. Color isn't bad, but black is high. With the standard size cartridges (the PGI-250 black and CLI-250 colors including a photo black), black pages cost around 5 cents and four-color pages, 16.6 cent per sheet. Using the XL cartridges drops a black page only to 4.6 cents, and four-color pages, 12.8 cents. There's an XXL black, but it drops the price of pages a mere 0.2 cents.

Speed-wise, the MX922 fell in the middle of the pack, but it's certainly fast enough for the small office role for which it's intended. Text and monochrome newsletters with mixed graphics print at 8.6 pages per minute on the PC and 8.1 ppm on the Mac. Full color photos print about one every two minutes to glossy stock, but nearly 3 a minute to plain paper. Copies arrived at about 6.1 per minute, a very good pace.

Canon warrants the MX922 for a single year, which is better than the 90 days you get with entry-level MFPs, but not as nice as the three years you'll get with business-class inkjet MFPs such as the HP OfficeJet Pro 276dw. Canon did not provide a recommended or real-world monthly duty cycles, but judging from the quality of the construction, 250 to 500 pages might not be out of line. If you're printing or copying any more than that, you should be looking for something with cheaper inks.

The $200 competition is tough

The MX922 is a good MFP for the small office with moderate-volume copying and printing needs. The duplexing and output are sweet, and the fax is a bonus for those that need it. But we're not fans of the control panel. At the time of this writing, the MX922 was available for considerably less than the retail price we list here and it's a lot more appealing at $150 than $200, where it has to compete with the likes of the HP Photosmart 7520 and the Epson Expression Premium XP-800.

Malware steals Litecoins, Bitcoin's younger sibling

A simple piece of malicious software is circulating that steals Litecoins, a virtual currency based on the Bitcoin system.

Security vendor ESET wrote the malware infects Windows computers. The program tries to steal "wallet.dat" files, which are used to store Litecoins in software programs.

The malware "is not very widespread at the moment, but Litecoin may become a target for attackers as its popularity and user base increases," wrote Robert Lipovsky, a malware researcher with ESET.

The malware sent the wallet file to a remote FTP server controlled by the attacker. But the web host has been made aware of the scam, and a warning is now shown when connecting to the attacker's FTP site.

The main Litecoin software application, called Litecoin-Qt, has a feature that lets users encrypt their wallet. An attacker would still need a password in order to unlock the coins.

Litecoin is closely based on the Bitcoin system. It uses the same protocol and a peer-to-peer network to transfer litecoins from one computer to another.

But Litecoin has taken a square aim at Bitcoin's weaknesses and claims to offer faster verification times for transactions. In Bitcoin's system, a transaction is usually considered legitimate if it achieves six verifications from the network, which can take from a few minutes to up to three hours.

Litecoin's system has been engineered to confirm transactions within three minutes, according to the project's website. Litecoins were trading on Wednesday for around US$2.70 each, according to BTC-e.com, a virtual currency exchange.

AT&T iPad hacker files appeal over conviction, long sentence

A U.S. man prosecuted for exposing a weakness in how AT&T handled the personal data of its iPad users filed an appeal on Monday of his conviction and 41-month sentence.

Andrew Auernheimer, known as "weev," created an automated tool to extract the names and email addresses of 114,000 iPad 3G owners from AT&T's servers, which were used by customers to access their accounts. The information was later passed to the online news site Gawker.

Auernheimer's case drew wide attention for his lengthy prison sentence, which his attorney Tor Ekeland said via email was at the high end for computer-related criminal cases.

He was indicted in 2011 in federal court in New Jersey on two felony counts of conspiracy to access a computer without authorization and fraud related to personal identification under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. He was convicted after a five-day trial in November 2012.

Auernheimer maintained he was helping AT&T with its security, but the company claimed nobody from Auernheimer's hacking group, known as Goatse Security, contacted it about the problem.

His appeal, filed in 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, was written by his trial lawyers, Tor Ekeland and Mark Jaffe with help from the Electronic Frontier Foundation, George Washington University Law School Professor Orin Kerr and an EFF fellow, Marcia Hofmann.

The appeal contends that Auernheimer did not violate law by accessing AT&T servers. The company had linked the Integrated Circuit Card ID (ICC-ID), a serial number on the SIM card of an iPad with mobile connectivity, with the user's email address.

When a user visited AT&T's website, the email field would automatically be populated based on the ICC-ID, which was apparently intended to help users save time when logging in.

But Auernheimer's friend, Daniel Spitler, discovered that changing the ICC-IDs by a single digit would return a new user's email address. Then the two men developed an application called the "iPad 3G Account Slurper" to pull the names and email addresses en masse.

Since the data was freely available on the internet, Auernheimer's actions did not constitute theft, the appeal contends.

"AT&T chose not to employ passwords or any other protective measures to control access to the e-mail addresses of its customers," the appeal reads. "The company configured its servers to make the information available to everyone and thereby authorized the general public to view the information."

The appeal also argues one of the counts against Auernheimer was incorrectly upgraded to a felony and that the case should not have been charged in New Jersey because no data was handled there.

Spitler pleaded guilty to similar charges as Auernheimer in a separate criminal case in federal court in New Jersey in June 2011. He has not been sentenced yet.

Apple's iWatch trademark filings spotted in Taiwan, Mexico

Apple has filed for the "iWatch" trademark in two more countries - Mexico and Taiwan, signaling that the company could be preparing to launch a smart watch.

The maker of iconic products like the iPhone and iPad filed for the trademarks in Mexico and Taiwan on June 3, the same day the company also filed for the rights to the iWatch name in Japan.

In Mexico, one of the trademark filings was made for product categories such as "computers", "peripheral devices", and "personal digital assistants." The other filing sought the iWatch trademark for clock-related products.

Successfully registering for a trademark in the country takes no longer than six months, according to the local trademark authority, the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property.

In Taiwan, Apple's trademark filing also covered similar product categories dealing with computers and watches. The process to receive the trademark rights will take several months.

Apple could not immediately be reached for comment. But the company has also reportedly filed for an iWatch trademark in Russia, according to a local newspaper.

The company has filed for the trademarks as wearable gadgets are expected to become the next big trend in the tech industry. Sony last week announced the latest version of its own smart watch that runs Android and has integrated support for NFC.

Apple rival Samsung has also said it is working on a smart watch device. In addition, Taiwanese manufacturing giant Foxconn Technology Group has unveiled new wristband technology that can be used in smart watches.

Alcatel-Lucent gives DSL networks a gigabit boost

Alcatel-Lucent and Telekom Austria have completed the world's first trial of G.fast, new technology enabling gigabit broadband over existing copper networks.

To help keep DSL a relevant option for the last part of a broadband connection, the so-called "last mile," vendors are working on a number of technologies to increase the broadband speeds that can be delivered over old telephone lines.

However, calling G.fast a last-mile technology is somewhat misleading, because the technology is only intended for distances up to 100 meters or 0.06 miles. But at that distance and less it helps copper keep up with fiber. The trial achieved a maximum speed of 1.1Gbps over 70 meters and 800Mbps over 100 meters over a single, good-quality cable, according to Alcatel-Lucent. On older, unshielded cables the trial managed 500Mbps over 100 meters on a single line, it said.

With the help of vectoring, G.fast also works over multiple copper lines at the same time. Vectoring already improves the performance of VDSL2 to 100Mbps over existing copper connections at up to 400 meters by removing crosstalk interference. It works by continuously analyzing the noise conditions on copper lines, and then creates a new anti-noise signal to cancel it out, much like noise-canceling headphones.

Just like next-generation mobile networks, G.fast uses more spectrum to achieve the higher speeds.

Alcatel-Lucent isn't alone in working on G.fast products and will compete with the likes of Huawei Technologies. The plan is to have a standard ready next year, followed by chipsets in 2015 and first-generation commercial products in 2016, which won't have support for vectoring, according to Stefaan Vanhastel, marketing director for the Fixed Networks business at Alcatel-Lucent.

The company and the rest of the industry are working hard to make G.fast a commercial reality at an interesting time for the broadband market. At the end of 2012, analyst company Point Topic said that subscriber numbers for copper-based broadband services had fallen for the first time. Recent data from the company showed that this decline has accelerated in 2013, with about 2.8 million subscribers lost in the first three months of the year.

Copper remains the dominant technology, but Point Topic believes that a shift in technology is occurring, particularly to fiber and hybrid fiber, as consumers require and are willing to pay for higher speeds from their broadband connections, it said.

It is in these hybrid networks, which use fiber for as long as possible and then switch to copper, where Alcatel-Lucent G.fast will find a home. The technology will, for example, be used for just the last tens of meters to avoid having to enter a subscriber's home, which is both time-consuming and expensive, Vanhastel said.

Nokia to pay $2.2B for Siemens' stake in Nokia Siemens Networks

Nokia is to acquire Siemens' 50 percent stake in joint venture Nokia Siemens Networks, which will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Finnish company after the transaction is completed.

The handset maker is paying €1.7 billion (US$2.2 billion) to acquire the stake in the mobile networks equipment company. The Siemens name will be phased out, and a new name and brand will be announced at the closing of the transaction expected by the third quarter of this year.

The acquisition has been approved by the boards of both Siemens and Nokia, and is subject to customary regulatory approvals.

Nokia said it will support the current management plan for Nokia Siemens Networks, including a restructuring plan already in progress. The current management and governance structure will stay in place, with Rajeev Suri continuing as CEO and Jesper Ovesen as executive chairman of the board of directors.

Nokia Siemens Networks' operational headquarters will remain in Espoo, Finland, and the company will continue to have a strong regional presence in Germany, including its major hub in Munich, the companies said in a statement Monday.

Of the €1.7 billion purchase price, €1.2 billion will be paid in cash at the closing of the transaction. The balance will be paid in the form of a secured loan from Siemens due one year from closing. Nokia said it has obtained committed bank financing for the cash portion.

Nokia reported first-quarter sales of €5.85 billion, down 20 percent year-on-year, and a net loss of €272 million, smaller than the year-earlier loss of €928 million, as the company faces competition from Samsung Electronics and Apple in its smartphones and overall handsets business. Nokia Siemens Networks has established a leadership position in LTE, which provides an attractive growth opportunity for Nokia, the company said.

Nokia Siemens Networks was established in April 2007 combining Nokia's networks business group and Siemens' carrier-related operations for fixed and mobile networks. The financial results of the joint venture have been consolidated to Nokia since then, which will continue after the acquisition of the Siemens' stake.

Two malware programs help each other stay on computers

Two malicious software programs that help each other stay on computers are proving difficult to remove.

The programs work together by alternately downloading slighter different variations of the other in an attempt to evade antivirus software, wrote Hyun Choi of Microsoft's Malware Protection Center, on Sunday.

One of the malware programs, called Vobfus, was detected in September 2009. It is known as a downloader, or a program that downloads other pieces of code.

Once Vobfus infects a computer, it downloads from a remote command-and-control server a program called Beebone, which is another kind of downloader that installs other malicious programs on a computer. The two work together, downloading variants of the other that are not immediately detected by antivirus products, Choi wrote.

"This cyclical relationship between Beebone and Vobfus downloading each other is the reason why Vobfus may seem so resilient to antivirus products," Choi wrote. Updated antivirus products may detect one variant present on the system; however, newer downloaded variants may not be detected immediately."

Other malware programs have been known to update themselves once a computer is infected. But if the malware is detected and removed, the targeted computer would have to be infected again by an attacker. The approach of Vobfus and Beebone makes it more likely the computer will remain infected.

Vobfus is also a worm that copies itself to removable drives. It uses the autorun function that, if enabled on a computer, causes Vobfus to automatically run and infect Windows computers.

"In the wild, we have observed that Vobfus maintains a very successful removable-drive infection rate," Choi wrote.

US senators demand to know from Clapper extent and benefits of spy program

A group of 26 U.S. senators, cutting across party lines, are seeking "public answers" on whether the National Security Agency collected in bulk other data such as credit card purchases and financial information in the U.S. besides phone records.

The senators want the information for a public debate on the surveillance controversy, and have in a letter to Director of National Intelligence, James R. Clapper, also asked for how long the NSA has used the Patriot Act to engage in bulk collection of records of people in the U.S., and whether the information includes cell-site location data.

The NSA has been allowed by a court order to collect phone metadata of a large number of customers of Verizon, according to a report in the Guardian last month. The information was said to have been leaked by a former NSA contractor, Edward Snowden, who also passed on documents that suggested that the NSA had real-time access to the content on servers of Internet companies like Facebook and Google.

Beyond collecting telephony metadata such as telephone numbers dialed and length of calls, the program under which Verizon data was collected does not allow the government to listen in on anyone's phone calls, and the information acquired does not include the content of any communications or the identity of any subscriber, Clapper said in a statement, while confirming the authenticity of the order.

The program under the Patriot Act is conducted under authority granted by Congress and is authorized by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC), and included authority to compel production of business records and other tangible things relevant to an authorized national security investigation with the approval of the FISC, Clapper added.

After the publication in newspapers of the classified documents, U.S. President Barack Obama called for a public debate on the tradeoff between privacy and security.

"Reliance on secret law to conduct domestic surveillance activities raises serious civil liberty concerns and all but removes the public from an informed national security and civil liberty debate," the senators said in a statement Friday. The senators include Ron Wyden, a democrat from Oregon, who organized the letter.

Telephone records can reveal a variety of private personal information including on personal relationships, political and religious affiliations and family medical issues, the senators wrote in their letter to Clapper. The collection of cell phone location data would effectively convert cell phones into tracking devices, the senators added. "We are concerned that officials have told the press that the collection of this location data is currently authorized," according to the letter.

The senators have also attempted to fill other gaps in their information on the government's secret surveillance programs, including asking for information on specific instances where the review of bulk phone records collected under section 215 of the Patriot Act has helped thwart a particular terrorist plot, which is a key justification the government uses for surveillance.

The Patriot Act's business records authority is broad in scope, and can be used to collect information on credit card purchases, pharmacy records, library records, firearm sales records, financial information and other sensitive data, according to the letter.

New legislation, introduced last week in the U.S. Senate, called the FISA Accountability and Privacy Protection Act of 2013, aims to reform the Patriot and FISA Amendments Acts to provide greater oversight and control to the government's surveillance programs.

More ink choices, but worse ink prices

The Canon Pixma MX922 is a good MFP for the small office with moderate-volume copying and printing needs. The duplexing and output are sweet, and the fax is a bonus for those that need it. But we're not fans of the control panel. At the time of this writing, the MX922 was available for considerably less than the retail price we list here. It's a lot more appealing at around $150 than at $200, where it has to compete with the likes of the faster, more economical HP Photosmart 7520 e-All-in-One and the Epson WorkForce 845.
